Back from vacation

I’m back from vacation and ready to pick up the brush.  Vampire Count BSB is next.  If you’ve got any minis for me to paint let me know.

Genestealer and harlequin finished

I finished up the Genestealer and the Harlequin tonight.  The details on both of them were actually not too bad, so that worked out well.

My next min is the Vampire Count BSB.  The mount is mostly finished, but I had some problems drilling the hole in the vamp’s hand to hold the banner.  I finally got it all straightened out, but then last night I accidently broke the banner off again.  I think it is going to take some putty work to get the hand to be beefy enough to hold the flag.

Harlequins and ransomware

So I’m finally slowly getting back into painting.  I’ve been working on the harlequin since it seems to be inspiring me at the moment and I go to post the pictures online and… virus on the computer preventing me from doing anything!  Joy!

After a couple hours battle with SpyDoctor or whatever (who infected my computer and then tried to get me to pay $49.99 to install the “cleaner” to remove it) I’m back to about 90%.  Removing the bugger is tricky since if I miss a single reg entry or autorun it reinstalls itself.  I know I’m still missing a piece because Google Chrome randomly stops downloading pages, but at least I’m mostly running again.

Here’s the harlequin.  The instructions were “do whatever you want, since they are all supposed to look different”.  Well, at first I was going to do some ultra colorful purple/yellow or something, but then I realized that I can’t paint black or white, so I decided to try both…

The black and white are done (although I might go over the black with another glaze to soften the highlights again), but the teal still needs to be finished.  There are a couple of gems on the guns and the boots that need to be done, as well as the large gem in the center of the chest.  Overall I’m pretty happy with it.  Still trying to figure out black and white though…

June painting Statistics

Minis painted for anyone or anything – 0

June was a pretty bad hobby month.  After my last post (June 10th) I didn’t touch a brush for exactly one month.  I’m not sure exactly what caused it, but it seems to be passing since I painted for a couple of hours a day for the past couple days.  I apologize to everyone that is currently waiting on minis from me.  I should be back in action and getting the minis that I’ve got back in the next week or two.

Cowboys, Skeleton Horses and Genestealers.

I found that after a couple of days on vacation I missed my paintbrush.  Not enough to wish that I was home or anything, but enough that when I had a couple hours to spare in the evenings I felt like painting was the thing to do.  Only I didn’t bring everything with me, so no dice.  Maybe I could make some sort of portable painting station?  Thoughts for the future.

Painted for about 2 hours this evening, plus 10 – 15 minutes in the afternoon priming.  I received a box from Tristan containing the Genestealer and Harlequin in the mail on my arrival home.  I’ve been kind of excited to paint the Harlequin since I knew it was coming, but when I got them out of the boxes I found it was the Genestealer that inspired me tonight.  As an added bonus, it included the cowboy that I sent off to him for painting.  I’m plenty happy with him and he will go on the shelf until I can get the rest of the cowboys painted up.

The Genestealer request came in for purple skin and green armor, so I did my best to match the colors and got a couple of layers done.  These guys seem to be made for drybrushing since everything is textured.  I dislike drybrushing, so I decided for a basecoat, wash then highlight for the skin.  Normally I’d just build it up in layers, but some of the folds are tiny and would take forever to highlight individually.  On some of the revealed skin I did drybrush just to keep from going crazy.

Skin is done.  Armor needs midtones finished and highlights done.  All extras (face, claws, medallion necklace thing) still need to be done.  Another sitting should finish him off.  Colors used so far are in the pictures behind the mini.

My lighting is fighting with me, so I can’t get a good picture of the green.

I also put another layer of highlights on the skeletal horse to brighten it up a bit.  It looks better now I think, although I realized that my final highlight (Reaper Pearl White) is actually a metallic white.  Luckily I noticed after painting a couple of highlights and it was thinned down so the matte sealer should eliminate the shine from the metal flakes.

Skeleton horses and slow mail service

My goal was to prep, prime and start on all the three “commission” minis at the same time, but the mail service from Northern Canada to the Northern USA seems to have hit some sort of problem (maybe one of those freakish late May snowstorms or something).  I’m expecting the package any day now, but until then I figured I’d start the Vampire Count BSB.  Actually, I technically started on the horse.  The request came in that the skeleton have that clean bleached skeleton look like the ones in this picture.

Well, I broke out the paints and used the same colors and ended up with this…

He seems a lot darker and less clean than the skellies above and I’m not sure why.  I’m thinking he needs another layer of highlight color and then maybe a small highlight of white to get him to what he looks like in my head.

I’ll be leaving on a mini vacation down to our nation’s capital tonight and won’t be back until the middle of next week, so I won’t get any painting done between now and then, and no updates to the blog.  If I don’t get the Canada package today, maybe while I’m in Washington DC I can find whoever runs the post office and ask them what’s going on.

May Painting Statistics

May 2010

Minis painted for others : 0

Minis painted for me : 3

Minis dipped : 5

Minis purchased : 10

I decided to keep the painted and dipped into separate categories, since putting them all in painted just seemed like artificially inflating my numbers to me.  Maybe I’m just stuck thinking “Dipping is too easy to count” and I should just include it in the painted totals, but for now this is where they are staying.
