Almost finished with the 20mm moderns

So these past couple weeks have been pretty crazy real life wise, so I haven’t been able to put in any serious painting time recently.  Thankfully, things slowed down enough today for me to spend a couple hours with the brush.  Here’s what I’ve got.

Remember this photo?  I’m going to refer to them as 1,2,3 and 4 from left to right.  1 is the figure that was dipped in Army Painter.  Pretty much a failure.  2 was painted and then inked to try to bring out the recesses.  I’m pretty happy with that one.  3 and 4 were primed black and painted up in layers.  They look alright, but the colors really are off.  Well, I went back and repainted 3 and 4…

This is what they currently look like.  The figures in this picture going from left to right are actually 3, 4 then 2 in the picture above.  This brought them much more in line with the way the uniforms should look, and I’m pretty happy with them.

I also started on the next set of 3.  They were primed white, inked brown and then highlighted up.  You’ll notice that there are only two in the picture because right before I went to photograph them, one of my cats jumped up on the painting table and started playing with them.  One fell to the floor and went MIA for a little while, plus was broken off it’s base.    Overall, I think this method looks the best in person.  These still need the black highlighted and some of the details picked out (in brown maybe?) but they are coming along nicely.

I also tried to fix up the Army Painter dipped guy.  Didn’t work…

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any way to save him.  So far, he’s got a layer of primer, a layer of sand colored spraypaint, a basecoat, an Army Painter dip layer, a matte finish coat, another coat of primer, plus my couple layers of paint.  The detail on the figure, which was fine to begin with, is completely obscured.  In fact, I’m lucky I can still see his nose.  I’m tempted to smash him with a hammer and call him a casualty marker.

So overall I’ve got 8 of 12 90% finished (plus they need to be based) 2 primed and 2 still bare plastic.  Tomorrow I’ve got nothing to do, I’ll take another couple hours and have 10 of 12 completely finished.  Well, that’s the goal anyways…
